I make this protein hot chocolate every single night for me and for my boys.
And I’m not overstating this… if it’s under 70 degrees outside, my boys are asking for it. Today one of them asked me to make it for him while we were sitting at the vet’s office for our dog’s check-up. That’s how good (and how easy) this is.
Here’s the thing. It takes about 2 minutes, there’s no saucepan to wash, and there are zero clumps. It packs 38 grams of protein, and it’s filling enough to hold you until morning.
The best part? My kids don’t miss the super sweet stuff anymore. Any hot chocolate we grab while we’re out now tastes too sweet to them. They’d rather have mine at home. Yay for adapted taste buds!
I’m sharing two ways to make it below: my from-scratch version and a 3-ingredient Swiss Miss shortcut. Both have nearly identical macros, so pick whichever you have on hand.
Why This Protein Hot Chocolate Works
Most protein hot chocolate recipes have you whisking over a stove, watching the temperature, and straining out clumps. I don’t do any of that.
It’s made in the microwave. I heat the milk by itself first, then add everything else. No pot, no constant stirring.
A hand frother does the work. It blends the protein powder in completely and gives you that foamy coffee shop top (my boys love the foam).
It has more protein than most. At 38 grams per mug, it’s more than a lot of protein shakes. And it’s filling, which is my favorite thing about it.
It’s easy on sensitive tummies. I use a beef-based protein powder (not whey) and Fairlife milk, which is lactose-free. One of my boys gets an upset stomach with a lot of dairy, and this one works for him.
What You Need
Fairlife skim milk. It’s ultra-filtered, so it has more protein than regular milk, and it’s lactose-free. This is where a big chunk of the protein comes from.
Chocolate protein powder. I use Active Stacks chocolate, which is beef-based. 24 grams is about 3/4 of a scoop (a full scoop is 33g). Weigh it if you’re tracking macros. If you use a different powder, go by grams, not scoops.
Unsweetened cocoa powder (from-scratch version). It deepens the chocolate flavor and adds a little fiber.
Monk fruit sweetener (from-scratch version). One teaspoon is plenty for us. Adjust to taste.
Sugar free Swiss Miss (shortcut version). Half a packet per mug replaces the cocoa and sweetener.
A hand frother. This is the secret to no clumps. A cheap one works fine.
How to Make Protein Hot Chocolate (Without Clumps)
- Heat the milk. Pour 360ml Fairlife milk into a microwave-safe mug and heat for 1 minute 30 seconds.
- Add the rest. Add the protein powder, cocoa powder, and monk fruit (or half a Swiss Miss packet).
- Froth. Use a hand frother until everything is smooth and foamy.
That’s it.
Here’s why it doesn’t clump. Most recipes heat the protein powder along with the milk, and that’s when it gets thick and lumpy. When you heat the milk first and froth the powder in after, it blends right in. I make this every night and I have never once had to strain it.
Tip: use a big mug. The froth rises, and you’ll want the room.
The 3-Ingredient Protein Hot Chocolate with Swiss Miss
This is the version I reach for most nights. Milk, half a packet of sugar free Swiss Miss, and chocolate protein powder.
The macros are almost identical to the from-scratch version:
| Version | Protein | Carbs | Fat | Fiber |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| From scratch | 38.3g | 19g | 1.9g | 3.5g |
| Swiss Miss shortcut | 38g | 19g | 2g | 2g |
The from-scratch version has a little more fiber and lets you control the sweetness. The shortcut saves you measuring two ingredients. Honestly? Both taste great. Use whichever you have in the pantry.
How I Make 4 Mugs Every Night
I make one for each of us, every night. Here’s my little assembly line:
- Put the first mug of milk in the microwave.
- When it’s done, start the second mug heating.
- While the second mug heats, add the powders to the first mug and froth it.
- Repeat until everyone has a mug.
There’s no waiting around, because you’re always frothing one while the next one heats. And with the shortcut version, 2 packets of Swiss Miss covers all 4 mugs (half a packet each).
Substitutions
Oat milk. I sometimes make my boys’ mugs with unsweetened oat milk (it’s cheaper than Fairlife, and we always have it). Just know the protein drops, since oat milk has much less protein than Fairlife. The 38g number only applies to the Fairlife version.
A different protein powder. Any chocolate protein powder works. Go by grams, not scoops, since scoop sizes vary by brand. Whey works too, though I prefer beef-based for my sensitive-tummy kid (and Active Stacks chocolate is my favorite, plus it’s sugar free).
A dairy-free version. Make the from-scratch version with oat milk and a beef or plant-based protein powder. The Swiss Miss shortcut isn’t dairy-free, because the mix contains milk ingredients.
A quick note on dairy. Lactose-free isn’t the same as dairy-free. Fairlife works for my son, whose tummy is sensitive to dairy. If your child has a true milk allergy, Fairlife isn’t safe for them. Stick with the dairy-free version above, and check with your pediatrician if you’re not sure.
Protein Hot Chocolate FAQs
Will protein powder clump in hot chocolate?
Not with this method. Heat the milk first, then add the powder and use a hand frother. It blends in completely. Clumps usually happen when the powder heats along with the milk.
Can kids drink protein hot chocolate?
Absolutely… and mine ask for it almost every night. Here’s the thing, though. Your kids don’t need the same mug you do.
I weigh my protein powder on my food scale for my own mug, but for my boys I eyeball it. Sometimes I use about half a scoop. Sometimes I make one full mug and split it between two kids, so each gets about half the protein. And sometimes I swap in unsweetened oat milk.
Have a teenager who plays a sport? Go for the full amount. Younger kid who just wants something warm before bed? Scale it down. This recipe is meant to flex for your family, not the other way around.
Will my kids like it if they’re used to regular hot chocolate?
Most likely, yes. Mine don’t miss the overly sweet versions at all. Now when we get hot chocolate while we’re out, they say it’s too sweet. Taste buds adapt when you lower the sugar a little at a time, and this is an easy place to start.
Is protein hot chocolate filling?
Very. With 38 grams of protein, it holds me over far better than a regular mug of cocoa. That’s what I love most about it.
Can I make it on the stove?
You can, but I don’t. Heat the milk on the stove until steaming (not boiling), pour it into a mug, then add the powders and froth. The microwave is just faster with less to clean.
