THE MAIN CHARACTER
The Lead
This book actually has two main characters. Sadie Hahn is 12 years old — she has a little brother named Silas and recently lost her dad. Rad is 13 and he’s homeschooled. He runs a YouTube channel called Rad Wilderness, where he posts survival videos for his followers.
WHAT HAPPENS
The Story
When Sadie and her brother Silas enter a contest to be on Rad Wilderness, she’s shocked when they actually win. The prize is a trip with Rad to show him around the Rockies. But when Sadie and Rad go on a rafting trip on the river, an earthquake throws them off track and strands them deep in the Rockies. What happens next? You have to read it to find out.

This is a survival and adventure book with an outdoorsy, adventurous vibe. The author makes it feel like you’re really out there with them in the wild — like you’re stuck in the Rockies right alongside Sadie and Rad, figuring out how to survive.

FOR THE GROWN-UPS
A Note for Parents, from Grey’s Mom
The publisher lists this book for ages 8–12, but I’d recommend it for ages 10 and up. There are some intense moments. The kids find a body after the earthquake and deal with a mountain lion encounter. Sadie is also grieving the recent loss of her dad, which is a theme throughout the book. None of it is graphic, but it’s heavier than other 8-12 year old books we’ve read. Younger or more sensitive readers might want to wait a year or two above the publisher’s recommended age category.
Overall, the story is built around resilience, resourcefulness, and friendship.
